Cork Prototypes

Cork is one of Portugal’s biggest industries and a natural material with impressive properties. From stoppers of wine bottles, to shoe designs and wall coatings, cork is a versatile material that can undergo a great amount of different processing leading to different appearances.
In August 2018, we had the opportunity to spend one month in a small village in Evora close to a skillful yet peculiar craftsman devoted to traditional materials and natural processes. Thanks to his deep interest and understanding of CNC milling, we could gain some valuable experience working on our projects.
Laptop Support / Case
This prototype was made to be used as a case and support while I am working on the laptop. The impermeability and lightness of the cork,as well as the thermal conductivity makes it a perfect choice to be used as a case.
Lamp
A visual game between two natural materials, cork and bamboo. The cork was CNC milled to give a simple yet elegant result and the top part was 3D woven with rattan.
Maze
A maze that can be played by any age, sex, race, level of IQ, religion, political beliefs, profession. We produced two versions of mazes - one was with a 100% natural cork and the other one with processed cork.
With new technologies, we can achieve a visual twist on regularly classic ideas without compromising with technical limitations and design challenges.
